Terms of use
Last updated 4 August 2026
Shadowy is made by Jakebuild. By using the app you agree to what follows. If you do not, please do not use it.
What you may do
Use Shadowy to practise a language, for as long as you like, on the devices your Apple Account allows. The takes you record are yours. We claim no ownership of them and no licence over them — we never receive them.
What you may not do
- Take the app apart, or try to derive its source, beyond what the law allows you regardless.
- Use it to break the law, or to record anyone who has not agreed to be recorded.
- Redistribute the app or resell access to it.
Video comes from YouTube
Episodes are real YouTube videos, played through YouTube's own embedded player. We do not host, own or licence that video, and we do not download it. Your use of it is subject to YouTube's Terms of Service. Video can be removed or restricted by its owner or by YouTube at any time, which will make an episode stop working through no action of ours.
Transcripts and meanings
Transcripts are prepared automatically and are not guaranteed to be accurate. Word timings may drift and lines may be wrong. Meanings come from Apple's on-device translation, which returns one reading of a word rather than every sense it can carry. Shadowy is a practice tool, not a dictionary and not a source of record. Do not rely on it for anything that matters — translation of documents, medical, legal or safety-critical use.
Your recordings are your responsibility
Takes are stored on your device only. We hold no copy and no backup. If you delete the app, lose the device, or something goes wrong with it, your takes are gone and we cannot restore them. Keep your own copies of anything you care about.
Availability
The app depends on a server for transcripts and on YouTube for video. Either can be unavailable. We do not promise uptime, and features may change or be withdrawn between versions.
No warranty
Shadowy is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent the law permits. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, accurate or error-free.
Liability
To the extent the law permits, Jakebuild is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost recordings, arising from your use of the app. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Changes
These terms may change with new versions of the app. The date at the top of this page shows when they last did.
